Cişmigiu Park
|
- situated in the center of the capital, it streches on an area of about 17 ha
- it is Bucharest’s oldest and the most beautiful park
- the history of the place starts about 1779 when ruler prince of Wallachia, Alexandru Ipsilanti ordered two drinking fountains to be built in order to have good drinking water
- the name of the park derives from the name of the chief of the workers who built the fountains “Marele Cişmigiu”
- the work started under the guidance of Viennese paysagist architect Frederich Wilhelm Meyer, who came in the country in 1843

- at that time the place was full of marshes, reeds and club-rushes
- the park was opened in 1860
- it has :

- a vast French Garden in the west
- "Rondul Roman" towards Schitu Magureanu street, a place full of verdure that give shelter to busts cut in stone on high pedestals, representing famous men of culture:Mihai Eminescu, Alexandru Odobescu, Titu Maiorescu, I.L.Caragiale,George Cosbuc, St. O. Iosif, Ion Creanga, Al. Vlahuta, Duiliu Zamfirescu, B. P. Hasdeu, N. Balcescu, Vasile Alecsandri
- a rose garden in the north
- three lakes with an island on one of them and a landing stage where one can hire boats

between 1878-1884 part of Cişmigiu Garden is conceded to open Regina Elisabeta Boulevard
- the present area is about 14 ha, Cişmigiu Garden being unique as the conception and diversity of the dendrologic material is concerned, here rare species of trees declared “protected trees” are to be found, among them: Platanus acerifolia; Torreya nucifera; Torreya californica, Cedrus atlantica (Japanese red pine); Picea excelsa inverse (red spruce fir)

- Towards the end of the 19th c., one of the first kiosks in the capital was set up at the main entrance in Cişmigiu, opposite the Town Hall. The kiosk was restored and today you can admire it on the right side of the garden
- A special attraction was the restaurant in Romanian style built by architect Ion Mincu and called Monte Carlo. Bombarded during the war, the restaurant was rebuilt, maintaining its name.Today the restaurant with the terrace on the bank of the lake continues to attract customers willing to be served in a mirific landscape.
