Zambaccian Museum

  • the first room is dedicated to the two unquestionable masters of the Romanian art of the last century, N. Grigorescu and Ion Andreescu

 

  • some of Grigorescu’s paintings that one can admire are: "Maternitate" and "Taranca lucrand la razboi" - examples of his mature period, "Portret de femeie", the well-known "Autoportret" etc.; there are three paintings belonging to Barbizon – Fontainebleau period: "Ferma la Barbizon", "Intrare in padurea Fontainbleau" and "Peisaj cu stanci"
  • Andreescu’s name stands closely connected to “Iarna la Barbizon”

 

 

  • there are also paintings by Stefan Luchian from after 1902, the best period of the painter: "Mos Niculae cobzarul", "Autoportretul", "Lorica" and "Lautul", "Moara", "Peisaj de camp", "Marea Neagra la Tuzla", "Tufanele", "Crizanteme", "Scara cu flori" and "Trandafiri"
  • Petrascu’s paintings through its number and quality, represent one of the attraction of the museum:"Autoportretul cu bereta rosie"from 1923, "Poetretul lui Romascu", "Portretul lui Zambacu", "Anemone", "Carciumarese", "Natura statica cu picior de gips"

  • Theodor Pallady, who was one of the most constant friend and adviser of the collector, is present in the museum with the most representative paintings of his entire creation: "Nud pe fotoliu rosu", "Natura statica cu palaria si umbrela artistului", "Pont Neuf", etc.

  • there are 16 paintings from Tonitza’s work out of which you can admire: "Portretul lui Gala Galaction","Katiusa Lipoveanca", "Nina in verde"

  • Zambaccian encouraged and supported artists at the beginning of their activity in the last decade of the century, who showed talent, personality and force, such as Horia Damian and Corneliu Baba; the latter painted an excellent portrait of the collector in 1957, joining the older ones signed by Petrascu, Ciucurencu and Massimo Campigli
  • the sculpture collection of the museum comprises a selection out of which none of the representative names that illustrated the 20th c. is missing: Brancusi is represented by "Bust de femeie" and Ion Jalea by "Nud", while Han and Medrea are present with more than ten works each

  • the Zambaccian collection of foreign art includes works of the Impressionists: "Pod pe Sena" by Sisley, "Portret de fetita" by Pissaro, "Nud in peisaj" and "Doua femei la scaldat" by Renoir
  • other artists of the 20th c. found in the museum, are worth mentioning Matisse with "Nud in atelier" and "Nud in interior", Audre Derain with "Nud", two landscapes by Utrillo and a marine painting by Albert Marquet
  • the collector Krikor Zambaccian was born in 1889, in a family of Armenian origin settled at Constanta. From 1907 he attended the Institute of Commerce in Anvers and then Paris, where he familiarized himself with occidental art and met the painters Matisse, Dufy, Derain, Bonnard. These contacts helped Zambaccian to understand and appreciate the contemporary art. Attending the intellectual and artistic circles from the Bucharest of 1920-1950, he began to collect works of already acknowledged painters and even those of yet unknown ones.
