Antim Monastery



  • it is located on Antim street
  • foundation of St. Hierarch Antim Ivireanu, metropolitan bishop of Wallachia
  • he began the construction of the monastery on the 24th of April,1713 and finished it in 1715, when the church was hallowed
  • it was built on the site of a former wooden church
  • at first it was rectangular, limited by the exterior walls of the cells
  • 7 m. high and 1,05 m. thick walls
  • the complex was built after Antim Ivireanu’s plans
  • the Brancovenesque style church has:
  • a cross like plan
  • enlarged narthex
  • the altar screen apsis prolongued
  • square nave separated to the west by the narthex through 4 stone columns with sculptured pedestals and capitals
  • 2 tower spires raise above the narthex and nave

  • the porch leans on 10 stone columns with pedestals and capitals sculptured with vegetal motifs
  • above the roof of the porch, a rosette in stone with stained-glass windows representing the zodiac penetrates the wall
  • the door of the church, sculptured by metropolitan Antim, has a geometrical and vegetal decoration
  • Preda Zugravul’s old fresco was not preserved
  • the fresco was repainted in oil between 1860-1863 by Petre Alessandrescu
  • the fresco was restored by Costin Petrescu in 1950
  • the catapetasma is of stone of Albesti, dating from 1715
  • from the old inventory of the church 2 foundation icons distinguish themselves: “ St. Nicholas” and “ All Saints”, 1715
  • the entrance in the monastery is under the belfry tower, with 3 levels
  • the cells were built at the same time with the monastery and were used as: lodgings, administration, printing house and library
  • to the east, near the cells there are the chapel, the Superior’s dwelling place and the guest chamber

  • at first it was painted in fresco over which oil painting was applied
  • the old chapel is divided in: altar, nave, and pronaos, tower spire made of brick and concrete (1962-1964)

  • the present-day painting is that of D. Dimitriu-Nicolaide’s, 1951
  • the catapetasma was painted by Tattarescu
  • the hegumen houses were modified, today serving:
  • as residence for the ecclesiarchy of the monastery and for patriarchal vicar bishops
  • as dwelling place for the ministers of the church




  • the last restauration was done between 1960-1966
  • inside the monastery there is a museum with an important collection of icons and books        different liturgical objects having historical value
  • the museum is dedicated to Metropolitan St. Hierarch Antim Ivireanu’s activity
