Curtea Veche Museum

  • situated on 25-31, Franceza street
  • the first Voivode Court in Bucharest was built by the order of Vlad Tepes in the 15th c.
  • during the reign of Radu cel Frumos, it became the permanent capital of Wallachia
  • Mircea Ciobanul rebuilt the palace on its old foundations about the middle of the 16th c.
  • in the 16th c., the Voivode Court became the nucleus of Bucharest, the center of economic life of the town
  • in the 17th c. the Voivode Palace was enlarged and houses and kiosks were raised in the beautifully arranged gardens

  • at the same time part of the princely architectonic construction was destroyed by natural disasters and foreign occupations
  • after the Austrian-Russian-Turkish war from 1768-1774, the princely residence became uninhabitable
  • so, Alexandru Ipsilanti had to build another princely palace in Dealul Spirii – Curtea Noua (The New Court), in 1775
  • when the new buildings had been raised, the old ones, already ruins, were called Curtea Veche (The Old Court)
