Botanical Garden





  • it is situated in Cotroceni district and stretches for 7 ha
  • the first botanical garden in Bucharest was established as an institution in 1860, near the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, by dr. Carol Davila
  • In 1866 prof. dr. Dimitrie Grecescu took the leadership, and only a decade later the first catalogue with plants was published containing 3.700 species of plants cultivated in the open and in hot-houses







  • The garden was moved to the present spot in 1884, by Dimitrie Brandza, Romanian botanist, being helped to arrange it by paysagist architect Louis Fuchs, from Brussels
  • The arrangement of Botanical Gardens was finished in 1891, when the hot-houses and the building of the Botanical Institute were inaugurated
  • it was altered by the 1892 flood
  • The garden suffered damages during World War I when it was used by the troops of the German occupation that were cantoned inside the garden, as well as during World War II, when it was hit by 96 Anglo-American bombs.
  • it was rearranged every time due to the work of more generations of botanists

  • The hot-houses complex – is one of the most important building of the garden, that allows growing exotic plants from the warm regions of the globe
  •  Botanical Garden's Museum is situated at the entrance in the Garden, in a building in Brancovenesque style. More than 5.000 species of plants, inclusive 1.000 exotic species are displayed in this museum

  • The nursery – permits the revitalization of the sectors in the open and also the self-financing of the institution
  • Seeds sector – it deals with changings with similar institutions in the country and abroad
